Dhaulagiri Expedition

45 Days 44 Nights

Dhaulagiri, one of Nepal’s most formidable peaks, was first successfully climbed in 1960. Towering over 8,000 meters, it rises more than 7,000 meters above the Kali Gandaki Valley, stretching an impressive 30 km in length. Its massive size and dramatic presence make it one of the most awe-inspiring mountains in the world. Most climbers approach Dhaulagiri via the “Normal Route,” the same route used in the first ascent, though alternative routes have been explored from multiple directions.

The Dhaulagiri massif features five ridges and two main faces on its south and west sides, each rising around 4,000 meters from their respective base camps. The massif includes five major peaks:

  • Dhaulagiri I – 8,167 m
  • Dhaulagiri II – 7,751 m
  • Dhaulagiri III – 7,715 m
  • Dhaulagiri IV – 7,661 m
  • Dhaulagiri V – 7,618 m

Surrounding this colossal peak are other notable mountains, including Churen Himal Main (7,371 m), Gurja Himal (6,342 m), Putha Hiunchuli (7,246 m), and Junction Peak (4,235 m).

Overview

Dhaulagiri, the seventh-highest mountain on Earth, rises to an elevation of 8,167 meters (26,795 feet) above sea level. It is part of the Dhaulagiri Himal range in north-central Nepal, within the greater Himalayas. The name “Dhaulagiri” comes from Sanskrit, meaning “White Mountain,” a fitting description for its snow-covered peaks and glaciers.

Located in Nepal’s Myagdi District, Dhaulagiri stretches approximately 120 km from the Kali Gandaki River in the east to the Bheri River in the west. It also stands as the highest point of the Gandaki River Basin. Just 34 km east lies Annapurna I, and between these two giants flows the Kali Gandaki River through the Kaligandaki Gorge, which is considered the deepest gorge in the world.
