Annapurna I Expedition (8,091 m)

Annapurna I, standing at 8,091 meters, is the 10th highest mountain in the world and the eighth highest in Nepal. Though it is the lowest of the 8,000-meter peaks, it is widely regarded as one of the most technically challenging mountains in the Himalayas. The first successful ascent was achieved by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal on June 3, 1950. It was not until 1970 that Annapurna I was summited again, this time via its Northwest Ridge. The peak is located at 28°35’45″N, 83°49’20″E.

The Annapurna massif includes six major peaks:

  • Annapurna I: 8,091 m
  • Annapurna II: 7,937 m
  • Annapurna III: 7,555 m
  • Annapurna IV: 7,525 m
  • Gangapurna: 7,455 m
  • Annapurna South: 7,219 m

Climbing Annapurna I is extremely challenging due to steep snow slopes, technical terrain, and high-risk conditions, making it unsuitable for untrained climbers without experienced guides.

In Sanskrit, “Annapurna” translates to “full of food” and is commonly understood as the “Goddess of Harvests.” In Hinduism, Annapurna is revered as a goddess of fertility and agriculture and considered an avatar of Durga.

The entire Annapurna region is protected under the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal’s first and largest conservation area, covering 7,629 km² (2,946 sq mi). This region is also home to some of the world’s most famous trekking routes, including the Annapurna Circuit.

Annapurna I is infamous for its technical difficulty and high fatality-to-summit ratio, making it one of the most dangerous 8,000-meter peaks. Recently, a new route has been explored, offering the potential for a safer ascent. The South Face of Annapurna is one of the largest and steepest in the world, towering 3,000 feet above the Southwest face of Everest. While incredibly challenging, this route avoids many avalanche-prone areas found on the North Face, making it a promising and logical path for future climbers.

Overview

Maurice Herzog’s Annapurna Expedition has stood as an irony in the mountaineering world. The 10th highest mountain in the world was the first of the 8000 metre mountains to ever be climbed but since then climbing Annapurna has been notorious for its incredibly high fatality rate and has seen the lowest number of ascents as compared to other 8000 metre mountains. Annapurna is rarely attempted and summits on the mountain are rare. A combination of the overly difficult and steep terrain, unpredictable weather and risk of avalanches makes the Annapurna trekking Expedition one of the most challenging expeditions in the Himalayas and the world despite being only 8091 metres high.
