The Everest Three High Pass Trek is one of the most adventurous and rewarding treks in the Everest region of Nepal. Designed for experienced trekkers seeking a true high-altitude challenge, this circuit takes you through three major mountain passes above 5,000 meters—Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,420 m), and Renjo La (5,340 m)—each offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.

Unlike the standard Everest Base Camp Trek, the Three Passes Trek provides a more comprehensive and off-the-beaten-path experience. It connects the four major valleys of the Khumbu region: Bhotekoshi, Gokyo, Khumbu, and Imja, taking you through pristine landscapes, glacial lakes, remote Sherpa villages, and iconic viewpoints like Kalapatthar and Gokyo Ri.

The journey typically begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, followed by a gradual ascent through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, and onwards to the three passes. Trekkers will also visit Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and enjoy sunrise views from Kalapatthar (5,545 m), which offers one of the best views of Everest.

Day 01 :

Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m)

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu. You’ll be greeted and transferred to your hotel. Free time for rest or short exploration. Trek briefing in the evening.

Day 02 :

Free Day in Kathmandu – Trek Preparation

Today is a rest and preparation day in Kathmandu. Use this time to check your trekking gear, buy or rent any last-minute items, and ensure you're fully prepared. Your guide will assist with permits and equipment checks. You can also explore nearby cultural sites or relax before the adventure begins.

Day 03 :

Flight from Kathmandu (1,400m) to Lukla (2,840m) and Trek to Phakding (2,610m)

Take an early morning scenic flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. After landing, begin your trek with a gradual descent through pine forests and Sherpa villages along the Dudh Koshi River. Reach Phakding after 3–4 hours of walking.

Day 04 :

Trek from Phakding (2,610m) to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)

Today’s trek follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges, including the famous Hillary Bridge. The trail gradually ascends through pine forests and small villages before a steep climb to Namche Bazaar, the vibrant Sherpa town and gateway to Everest.

Day 05 :

Acclimatization Day at Namche Bazaar (3,440m)

Today is a rest day for acclimatization. To adjust to the altitude, take a short hike to the Everest View Hotel (3,880m) for stunning views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. You can also explore Namche’s local market, museums, and monasteries.

Day 06 :

Trek from Namche Bazaar (3,440m) to Thame (3,820m)

Leave the busy trail and head west toward the peaceful village of Thame. The route offers a scenic walk through pine forests, traditional Sherpa settlements, and views of Kongde and Teng Kangpoche peaks. Thame is home to one of the oldest monasteries in the Khumbu region.

Day 07 :

Trek from Thame (3,820m) to Marulung (4,210m)

Today’s trail follows the Bhote Koshi River valley, gradually ascending through yak pastures and isolated Sherpa villages. The landscape becomes more rugged and remote as you approach Marulung, a small settlement just below Renjo La Pass.

Day 08 :

Trek from Marulung (4,210m) to Lumde (4,368m)

Today is a short but important trek to aid acclimatization. The trail climbs gradually along a scenic high-altitude route with views of surrounding peaks. You’ll reach Lumde, a quiet village nestled below the Renjo La Pass, where you’ll rest and prepare for the next day’s high ascent.

Day 09 :

Trek from Lumde (4,368m) to Gokyo (4,790m) via Renjo La Pass (5,360m)

Begin an early morning climb to Renjo La Pass, a challenging ascent rewarded with breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and the turquoise Gokyo Lakes. After enjoying the panorama, descend carefully to the stunning Gokyo Valley.

Day 10 :

Trek from Gokyo (4,790m) to Dragnag/Thangnag (4,750m)

Leave the beautiful Gokyo village behind and trek eastward along the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal. The trail is relatively flat with spectacular views of Cho Oyu and the surrounding peaks. Reach Dragnag or Thangnag, a small settlement and base for the next pass, Cho La.

Day 11 :

Trek from Dragnag/Thangnag (4,750m) to Dzongla (4,700m) via Cho La Pass (5,420m)

Today’s trek involves a challenging climb over the Cho La Pass, one of the toughest parts of the trek. You’ll ascend steep, icy sections that may require crampons, rewarded by stunning views of Everest, Lhotse, and the surrounding glaciers. After crossing the pass, descend to the village of Dzongla for rest.

Day 12 :

Trek from Dzongla (4,700m) to Gorakshep (5,140m)

Today, you’ll trek through rugged terrain with a gradual ascent toward Gorakshep, the last stop before Everest Base Camp. The route offers stunning views of Pumori and other Himalayan peaks. Prepare for thinner air as you gain altitude.

Day 13 :

Trek from Gorakshep (5,140m) to Everest Base Camp (5,364m) and Descend to Lobuche (4,910m)

Start early with a trek to the iconic Everest Base Camp, soaking in breathtaking views of the Khumbu Icefall and surrounding peaks. After spending time at Base Camp, descend back to Lobuche for overnight rest and recovery.

Day 14 :

Trek from Lobuche (4,910m) to Chhukung (4,730m) via Kongma La Pass (5,535m)

Today, you’ll tackle the highest pass of the trek, Kongma La. The climb is steep and challenging but offers spectacular panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. After crossing the pass, descend to the peaceful village of Chhukung for rest.

Day 15 :

Trek from Chhukung (4,730m) to Island Peak Base Camp (5,200m)

Today’s trek leads you higher into the Imja Valley as you make your way to Island Peak Base Camp. The trail gradually ascends, offering close-up views of towering peaks like Island Peak (Imja Tse) and Ama Dablam. This is the starting point for those planning to climb Island Peak.

Day 16 :

Climb from Island Peak Base Camp (5,200m) to Summit (6,189m) and Descend to Chhukung (4,730m)

Start very early for the challenging summit climb of Island Peak. You’ll navigate snow, ice, and rocky terrain using crampons and ropes with your guide’s support. Reaching the summit rewards you with stunning 360° views of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. After celebrating, carefully descend back down to Chhukung for rest.

Day 17 :

Trek from Chhukung (4,730m) to Tengboche (3,870m)

Begin your descent through beautiful alpine forests and traditional Sherpa villages. Arrive at Tengboche, famous for its large monastery with panoramic views of Everest and Ama Dablam. A perfect spot to relax and soak in the spiritual atmosphere.

Day 18 :

Trek from Tengboche (3,870m) to Monjo (2,835m)

Descend through rhododendron forests and past small villages, retracing your steps toward the lower Khumbu Valley. Reach Monjo, a gateway village to Sagarmatha National Park, where you’ll rest before the final day’s trek to Lukla.

Day 19 :

Trek from Monjo (2,835m) to Lukla (2,840m)

On your final trekking day, enjoy a pleasant walk through forests and Sherpa villages as you return to Lukla. Celebrate the completion of your trek with a relaxing evening in Lukla.

Day 20 :

Flight from Lukla (2,840m) to Kathmandu (1,400m)

Take an early morning flight back to Kathmandu. Enjoy spectacular aerial views of the Himalayas during the short flight. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and relax after your trek.

Day 21 :

Departure from Kathmandu or Onward Journey

After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight. Whether you’re heading home or continuing your adventure in Nepal, this marks the end of your Everest Three High Pass Trek.

What problems can arise on high altitude?

Our itinerary has been specially tailored to prevent any kind of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) while moving up to higher altitudes. Normally, altitude sickness starts from 3,600 meters and above. You will be trekking at a relatively slow and gradual pace as part of the acclimatization process. Cut off caffeinated, alcoholic and smoking items. Drink at least 4 liters of water a day. Trek slow. Don’t skip the acclimatization days. Better to continue with Diamox (if any symptoms show up). Drink Garlic Soup. In the higher elevation, there is less oxygen in the air and this is more so while crossing high passes. Our expert guides will advise you on how to avoid AMS and treat it when/ if required.

What is the best Season for trek to Everest Three passes Trekking ?

The months of March to May in Spring and September to December in autumn are considered the best for the Everest Base Camp Trek as the weather conditions become favorable during this time, providing you with good visibility and a suitable atmosphere for the Everest Three Pass trek.
